The currency of Sri Lanka is called the Rupee. Rupee banknotes are issued in the following denominations: 20, 50, 100, 500,1000,2000 and 5000 Rupees.
Smaller values are issued as coins, with 1 Rupee = 100 Cents.

CURRENCY IMPORT/EXPORT RESTRICTIONS:
Local currency import/export is restricted to 1,000 Rupees. Foreign currency may be imported/exported for free; amounts over 10,000 United States Dollars equivalent require a declaration.
CIRCULATION:
There are several series of current notes:1981, 1989, 1991, 1995, 1998. Many outmoded notes are still redeemable. Guardian International Currency Corp. purchases recently outmoded notes at a reasonable discount.
ALTERNATIVE CURRENCIES:
All major currencies are accepted, as well as United Arab Emirates Dirham and Saudi Riyals.
